    2.05: Boarding Houses

This week we are talking about boarding houses, and we got to interview Dr. Wendy Gamber, who is one of the leading scholars on the history of the American boarding house. We trace Elfreth’s Alley’s history of boarding houses through the 18th and 19th centuries to the era when, nationally, the institution came under fire. Yet even when the boarding house seemed to fade into the sands of time, we see emerging echoes of it in the 21st century.

Enlightening!

A fantastic deep dive into our country’s history. Elfreth’s Alley is the only historic site dedicated to telling the story of three centuries of working class Americans, and in this podcast the historians focus on the stories that have been largely erased by history. It’s refreshing to see an organization dedicate time and resources to these topics, and it’s amazing to hear these stories of people who lived and worked on the Alley. I highly recommend a visit to the historic site and museum if you’re ever in Philly.

A Unique View of the Modernity of History

Amazing exploration into challenging themes of today, through the lens and setting of 18th century Philadelphia. Marriage, gender roles, women's role and more to come I am sure (up to episode 3 and blown away!).

Utter rubbish

I thought this was a history podcast... based on actual FACTS. It is not. Rather, it is a desperate attempt by the host to imagine “queer” history while citing real women. Such a disservice to a fascinating neighborhood I’d hoped to learn more about....
