Portraits: Works for Flute, Clarinet & Piano

The McGill brothers, Demarre (flute) and Anthony (clarinet), and pianist Michael McHale have constructed a terrific program around “Portraits of Langston,” Valerie Coleman’s imaginative reflections on works of American jazz poet Langston Hughes (read sympathetically here by OscarⓇ-winning actor Mahershala Ali). Paul Schoenfield’s Sonatina, characteristically vivid and rhythmically thrilling, also receives its first recording, while shorter pieces by Chris Rogerson, Guillaume Connesson, and Philip Hammond sit nicely alongside Rachmaninoff’s ever-evocative “Vocalise.” This is chamber music-making of a high caliber.
