"Right now, trans people face the unprecedented combination of political, social and physical violence--to the extent that when stories are told about our community, it is often through the lens of this violence,” says Imara Jones, host and creator of TransLash Podcast, Apple Podcasts’ Spotlight show for August 2022. “But the truth is that our lives are defined by so much more beyond hate. In almost every area of society, trans people are innovating, creating new futures and thriving--and this is the story I want to tell.”Jones first made an impact in a 2018 online docuseries about her transition and life and four years later, the podcast is just one part of TransLash Media, a fast-growing platform and nonprofit organization telling stories and reflecting the culture through a trans perspective. With new episodes twice a month, Jones delivers illuminating discussions with guests from the trans community as well as allies to help create a fairer world for all.
Each episode also starts with a segment that highlights a moment of joy to add a bit of levity to some of the heavier topics she covers. “We showcase the fundamental hope and joy which propels our community forward,” she says. “If you care about and want to understand trans people at this moment, we have evolved into essential listening both for our community and those outside of it.”
With anti-trans violence and political backlash at all-time highs, award-winning journalist Imara Jones hosts the TransLash podcast, where trans people and allies talk back about what matters most and discuss how to create a fairer world for all.

Anti-Trans Bans from Idaho to New York

Anti-Trans Bans from Idaho to New York

It’s been a rollercoaster of legal battles over anti-trans bans across the U.S., and the results are a mixed—and messy—bag. In this episode, Imara looks at how the Supreme Court is playing along with Christian nationalist schemes to ban gender affirming care for minors in Idaho. On the other side of the country, a win for equal access to athletic facilities in Nassau County, New York spells trouble, and a little bit of hope, for trans protections in blue states. Plus, what Iran’s missile attack on Israel means for President Biden’s road to reelection.

    Being Autistic and Trans

    Being Autistic and Trans

In celebration of Autism Acceptance Month, Imara learns more about the politics and lived experiences of being autistic and trans. She’s joined by influential social psychologist and author of the books “Unmasking Autism” and “Unlearning Shame,” Devon Price. During their wide-ranging conversation, the two dive into the complexity around defining what autism is, how the far right exploits stigma around autism against trans people, and the intricacies of self-diagnosis.

Biden Punts on Support for Trans Athletes

Biden Punts on Support for Trans Athletes

So what exactly do Easter eggs have to do with trans people? Imara dives into the asinine conservative uproar over Trans Day of Visibility this year and Caitlyn Jenner’s never-ending bad takes.

But Republicans aren’t the only only ones making a mess. Imara takes a closer look at how the Biden administration is dragging its feet on protecting trans athletes through promised changes to Title IX rules. And as pressure mounts on the President to take action on Gaza, she takes a look at the split-screen images of the Democratic National Convention’s glitzy celebrity fundraiser and growing pro-Palestine protests.

    Trans Youth in Oklahoma

    Trans Youth in Oklahoma

In the wake of Nex Benedict’s tragic death, Imara examines the escalating hostility and political attacks on trans kids in Oklahoma. First, she speaks with Oklahoma State Representative Jacob Rosecrants about keeping his trans son out of the spotlight, learning from non-binary state representative Mauree Turner, and what he’s hearing from his conservative colleagues behind closed doors. Next, Imara’s joined by Oklahoma State University researcher and advocate, Amy McGehee, to discuss what families of trans youth are grappling with since Nex Benedict’s death and the importance of creating a sense of safety at home for gender nonconforming kids.

The Absurdity of the TikTok Ban

The Absurdity of the TikTok Ban

Does TikTok really pose such a big security risk or is the U.S. Government trying to force a sale because they can’t control the platform?

Imara breaks down what you actually need to know about the so-called TiKTok ban with some cutting analysis and a little shade. Plus, she sheds light on why we shouldn’t be so surprised that public support for LGBTQ+ rights is on the decline before delving into Kansas’ effort to block trans people from having a driver’s license that accurately reflects their gender and the larger implications of that fight.

    Trans Hollywood and the Oscars

    Trans Hollywood and the Oscars

As the 2024 awards season comes to a close, Imara reflects on the groundbreaking contributions of trans filmmakers and actors to cinema. First, she sits down with actress Trace Lysette to talk about her role in the critically acclaimed film Monica. Trace explains why self-doubt is a luxury in the entertainment business and how she’s struggled to find work after starring in Monica. Then, Imara is joined by D. Smith, who delves into her pivot from producing music to directing films, the stylistic choices behind her documentary Kokomo City, and what it means to make Black films.

A wonderful pod

Speaking as a transfeminine enby and Muslim in north Texas, this podcast is absolutely necessary. I’m always dealing with something and it really helps to know that I’m not alone, and that my journey, while difficult, can lead to tremendous success and joy
