Apple Music Sessions: Tenille Townes

“It was so cool capturing the spirit of how it feels to play my songs live with my band,” Tenille Townes says about her performance during the new Apple Music Sessions series, recorded live at Apple Music’s new studio in Nashville. Townes may be a relative newcomer in the States, but at just 28, the Canadian country singer-songwriter is already a decorated star, with a trophy case bursting with Canadian Country Music Assocation Awards and similarly prestigious honors. Townes set up shop at Apple Music’s Nashville studio to showcase how she went from teenage songwriter to bona fide star, performing two original tracks and a cover of the classic Etta James song “At Last.” Townes is joined by her band on an energetic performance of her breakout hit “Somebody’s Daughter,” off 2020’s The Lemonade Stand. “Same Road Home,” a standout off Townes’ most recent release Masquerades, sounds especially fresh, as she celebrates unity and finding common ground within a chorus tailor-made for an audience sing-along. “Music and that collective spirit of coming together at a show is so very important as human beings to experience,” Townes says. “I wanted to capture all of that to put in this song, especially imagining how it could feel to sing this song all together live.” And on “At Last,” Townes goes solo and plays sultry, bluesy electric guitar as a kind of call-and-response accompaniment to her fiery vocal, proving she can command a stage with or without a band behind her.
