Rihanna’s Road to Halftime

Rihanna is officially back—with a special guest. Her Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show was exactly what we all hoped for: an unforgettable performance that could only be put on by the one and only Bad Gal herself. After the show, her team confirmed what the show only hinted at: She's pregnant with her second child. As this year’s headliner, Rihanna is not only one of the biggest music stars of the 21st century, she’s also one of the most quixotic and elusive. After a more than decade-long run starting in 2005 that produced eight hit albums, several blockbuster one-off singles, and pop-culture ubiquity, it’s been seven years since her last album, ANTI. Following that came a string of hit singles from other artists with Rihanna as guest, most notably “Wild Thoughts” with DJ Khaled and Bryson Tiller, which the trio played at the 2018 Grammys in Rihanna’s last public performance. In the interim, she launched a beauty and fashion empire; had a baby with A$AP Rocky; became a major philanthropist with massive donations to climate justice, domestic violence, and COVID relief; and dropped just enough social media cookie crumbs and incredible photos to keep the world obsessed. She wasn’t releasing music, but she seemed as successful and omnipresent as ever: Forbes estimated she was worth $1.7 billion—more than any other female pop star. Late last year, a picture of her tattooed hand holding a football—unveiled on her socials, naturally—let the world know the long, long wait was over: Rihanna was returning to the stage, headlining the first-ever Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show. A few weeks later, she dropped her first new music in years with two songs on the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. And then came news of a second child on the way. Below, you can relive Rihanna’s Halftime Show, add a playlist of the studio versions of her set to your Apple Music library, and revisit The Official Rihanna Interview hosted by Nadeska. We also have a suite of new Rihanna playlists, including an Apple Music Sing collection of her biggest songs, ready for you to sing along with and channel your inner RiRi. And if you haven’t already, revisit her hits—now in immersive Spatial Audio—to Rih-fresh your memory on her incredible run of albums and songs.
