The more I talk to people about living dairy-free, the more I find out how many people have decided to eliminate dairy or take on special diets as a way to manage various health conditions. This was what made me start my podcast - a series of ever-evolving conversations with friends, interspersed with deep dives on topics relevant to people who use diet as one way to manage their chronic health conditions.

It's been almost 3 years since I last published an episode of the podcast. Where have I been since then, and what's next? That's what I cover on this "in-between" podcast episode. See you for Season 2!

Lisa Kingery: Founder & CEO of FoodRight
It's been a long time coming, but this is the second to last episode of Season 1. What Season 2 will look like is a little up in the air, but I hope you take some time to look back on my interviews from 2020 and gain some little wisdom nuggets from all of my guests.

My guest this week (recorded in July 2020) is Lisa Kingery, RDN, Founder & CEO of FoodRight. Lisa and I talked about our food habits growing up, working with students, and the difference between a dietitian, nutritionist, and a health coach. You can learn more about Lisa and the resources we mentioned via the links below:

Leah Collins - Nurse and CBD
Hey, everyone! We're here with a special mid-week update. The rest of the blogs will be coming out on Mondays to round out the year, but I didn't want to wait as long to bring you episode 11 with Leah Collins. Leah is a nurse who works with CBD company so we spent a lot of time talking about how CBD is well beyond a trend and what it can do for your life. Some of the resources we cover on the episode include:

    CBD by Sea Nantucket
    Nantucket Mermaids

If you're interested in what Leah has to offer, those are definitely first places to check out.

Elizabeth Yarnell - Board-Certified Naturopath and Creator of Infusion Cooking

Elizabeth Yarnell - Board-Certified Naturopath and Creator of Infusion Cooking

Elizabeth Yarnell - Board-Certified Naturopath, Author, and Speaker
Welcome back to another week of the Dairy-Free State podcast. To round out 2020, I have quite a few excited guests ahead. This week's guest was so interesting to me! Elizabeth Yarnell is a naturopath, author, and speaker who created the patented (literally!) infusion cooking. So if you're interested in learning more from someone who avoids processed foods and shares her method of Dutch Oven cooking in a cookbook, Elizabeth is definitely someone to check out.

At the time of publishing this, I noticed that Elizabeth's site is down temporarily (I will update this as it comes) but you can still access her 7-day kickstart guide at bit.ly/eykickstart - so check that out while her site is under construction!

We talk about Elizabeth's own health history and MS diagnosis, her infusion cooking technique, and some of the experiences her patients come in with when they see her (including some of my own stories for good measure).

Some resources to check out that we discuss on this episode:

    Glorious One-Pot Meals - Elizabeth's cookbook
    Doing Harm
    7-Day Kickstart Course
    Elizabeth's YouTube

Josh - A Newbie to the Dairy-Free World

Josh - A Newbie to the Dairy-Free World

Josh: A newbie to the dairy-free world (and my dear friend) chats with me
Hey, everyone. I know I keep saying this but the pandemic has really been a trip for me. I've been busier than ever in my personal and professional life. Honestly, I feel very fortunate that things are working in that direction and not the other way around. But because of that, the podcast and other personal projects have definitely suffered. So that's why it took me so very long to get these episodes out. I was finally able to buckle down and publish these, so you'll see these come out through the end of the year, with "Season 1" ending at the end of the year.

I will be on the lookout for future guests and more topics. I'm interested to hear what you've taken out of this podcast, so if you have notes about things you've liked or things you'd like to hear more about, please let me know! I may include some solo recordings as well in 2021.

This was a really fun episode to record because I got to do it with a friend! Josh is dairy-free and diabetic and was at the very beginning of his dairy-free journey when we recorded this (which was at the end of May 2020 - see, I told you I'm running so very behind!) We talk about the wonders of milk alternatives, including macadamia milk! And, of course, the new trendy standard, oat milk. An update on the vanilla hemp milk: Yes, it was very good in smoothies.

This was a different type of episode because it really felt like two friends just hanging out, since it was. I hope this turns out to be a nice bright spot in your day. And if you'd like to be featured on the show, shoot me an email - sammi@dairyfreestate.com.

Annie Wegner LeFort - Chef, Master Food Preserver, and Certified Yoga Teacher

Annie Wegner LeFort - Chef, Master Preserver, and Yoga Teacher
Welcome to another episode of Dairy-Free State! This week's guest is Annie Wegner LeFort. Annie was a pastry chef around the same time she realized she needed to go gluten-free. What a torturous thing to be surrounded by temptation as you're changing your diet!

If you're looking for food preparation, preserving, and gluten-free cooking tips, go to Annie! We talk about the classes she offers, as well as the restaurants and businesses around Milwaukee that do a great job catering to special diets. Some of the businesses and resources mentioned in the podcast include:

The Gluten-Free Trading Company (no longer open, but wanted to give them a shout anyway)
    MOR Bakery & Cafe
Mindful Palate, which is now Eat Move MKE - this is where you can find out about Annie's cooking classes, yoga classes, and other services.
    Tricklebee Cafe
Dr. Rose Kumar at the Ommani Center
And finally, my recipe for sourdough starter banana bread

One note: I misspoke about SIBO in this episode, and I was still learning more about my condition at the time (it's been a few months). While the condition does include bacterial overgrowth, it's not necessarily bad bacteria, just bacteria growing where it shouldn't. I'll be putting out more about SIBO in the months to come in a dedicated blog series.
