About Boney M.

Hugely popular in Europe in the 1970s, the disco act Boney M. was the creation of Frank Farian, a German record producer and songwriter who also brought together Milli Vanilli in the 1980s. • Farian released Boney M.’s first song before he created the group. He wrote and recorded “Baby Do You Want to Bump” in 1974 and released it under the pseudonym Boney M. When the song began to catch on, he hired musicians to perform it on TV. • The original lineup comprised singers from the Carribean: Maizie Williams from Montserrat, Bobby Farrell from Aruba, and Marcia Barrett and Liz Mitchell from Jamaica. Though Farrell performed in concert with Boney M., Farian sang the male vocals on the group’s recordings. • The biggest of Boney M.’s eight studio albums was their third LP, 1978’s Nightflight to Venus. The album hit No. 1 on several European charts and spawned the double A-side single “Rivers of Babylon” and “Brown Girl in the Ring,” an international hit that became one of the top-selling singles of all time in the U.K. • Reggie Tsiboe, a Briton from West Africa, replaced Farrell after he was fired from the group in 1982. • Tsiboe was the focus of Boney M.’s last studio album, 1985’s Eye Dance, with original members Mitchell and Barrett appearing on only a handful of tracks. Williams didn’t appear at all. • Competing versions of Boney M. have toured since the late ’80s, with each member of the band allowed to use the name for live performances.
