Tl;Dr: ideally you should wait to update the app so they can iron out the flaws, but the IT refuse to allow news updates on the old version so you’ve no choice.
I was a big fan of the old app, especially given how lightweight it was to use on the go and how all articles could be loaded with a single refresh and then read offline at a later date.
The new app seems to have gotten rid of this, however. It now crashes whenever it’s launched offline. Articles take quite a few second to load rather than it all being done in advance like the previous versions.
I also find myself missing the “swipe for next article” feature rather than having to exit and go to the next article, which is clunky, unintuitive, and time consuming.
The ability to manually reorder or remove the category headings at the top of the page would also be welcome (bring back latest!).
All in all it seems like the app is still a bit unfinished and was wheeled out without much audience beta testing. Hopefully future versions will address this but until then I keep my review at 2 stars.
App is now a virus that shuts down the phone
I have been an electronic subscriber to the Irish Times for years using this app. I noticed on the latest update that a message came up that said “in-app purchases are not allowed.” I clicked ok and got on with my life and read my news stories. Now, however, that message just continuously reappears. Every time you click ok, the message comes up again. You cannot close the app, you cannot read news stories, you cannot switch apps. You are stuck clicking these messages that just keep recurring. The only way out of this “no in-app purchases” is to shut the phone down and reboot it. I’ve deleted the app several times and reinstalled. No joy. Do I cancel my Irish Times subscription since I cannot read articles due to the app crashing my phone? I have an iPhone 13 on the latest operating system. So the issue isn’t me.
Could easily be a lot better
This app is not good. It’s clunky and slow to use. It doesn’t feel like other apps and doesn’t behave as expected because it is poorly designed.
Some constructive suggestions: make the iPad app not simply a scaled up version of the iPhone app. The text is ridiculously big and it barely fits any content on my iPad’s massive screen. The app is also only able to be used in portrait for some reason. Also make it go back when you swipe right like most other apps.
This is frustrating enough of an experience to use that I’m considering just not reading the Irish Times, which is unfortunate.
