The Best Notetaking App. Full stop.

I’m a habitual notetaker, preferring to ‘handwrite’ vs mess around with a keyboard. This includes big, colourful and elaborate spider diagrams, sketches and drawings. Needless to say, I have been trying many different art and notetaking apps to see what works on my iPad Air. If my situation sounds like you then hands down, this might be the one. I was pleasantly surprised to get such decent features right out of the box for free, including different pens and brushes that CLEARLY explain what they do (pressure sensitive, texture) and everything is easily adjustable for fluidity or precision. The biggest bugbear was the limit to the number of layers you could have (4 or. 5). That said, when you hit the subscription/paywall, it’s not pushy and doesn’t offer the full package only to yank it away after 24 hours or so. This allows you to play around with what you might need at your own pace, whether the freebies are enough or might want ‘upgrade’ for the essentials (which unlocks things like unlimited layers, etc.) or something more. You can subscribe for the features, or do a one-time payment depending on what you need. Considering the ridiculous prices similar apps ask for the same features (sometimes spread aacross multiple apps) and together with the ability to buy additional brushes (if you’re into that) I’d say this is a good investment. Very pleased so far and hope this app remains as it is (or goes from strength to strength,)

Changed my workflow

Have had the app for a while, but in the last year really started to use it in anger with the advent of Covid and working remotely. Concepts has enabled me to take a big step towards an efficient paperless workflow.
As a professional Retail Store Designer I am constantly working on ideas for anything from fixtures or branding solutions to full store fit-outs. Historically I would have worked through ideas in sketch form on paper, scanned and distributed to the team. Formal design would then take place using CAD.
Now I start a new infinite canvas for each project, use it as a scrapbook for ideas and notes initially and begin iterating design sketch ideas. I can then develop presentation visuals alongside in the same canvas, drop in artwork from our graphic designers, assemble mood boards etc, all in one place. Coupled with the ease of exporting sections of the canvas at anytime in the process I can quickly communicate ideas to others.
The interface takes a little while to get used to, but once familiar and setup with your preferences for pen widths etc it becomes fluid and fun to use. The Copic colour wheel is fantastic and the layering system works really well. But the key is being vector based it means I can go back, make copies of certain drawings and edit every pen stroke if needed. Now encouraging colleagues to try the app too.

Some good features and excellent responsive support

It’s early days for my use of this app so I still have things to learn about it. It should also be noted that my primary reason for using it is to produce vaguely technical plans - room and house schematics, for example - which is possibly not its most natural playground. As a result there are some missing features (for me), but I have persevered, partly because I think its more artistic, freehand features might be useful in the future, and significantly because of the support provided to purchasers. I have used not only the routine support, but also taken a specific report of a problem to the online team and received speedy replies with, first a workaround, and second the admission that what I had reported was a bug...that had been fixed as a result of my report. All this leads me me to have confidence in the app - and even the hope that I might eventually benefit by further developments that could fill in some of the features I would like to see.
