Description

You can now randomly generate emulations within the emulation editor using the mutator.

A retro computing / pixel art camera app.

Retrospecs lets you convert images and video clips so they appear as they would on a wide variety of home computers and consoles from the 70's, 80's and 90's.

Simply take a picture (or select one from your photo library) and you can display it as it would appear on over forty systems including the Commodore 64, IBM PC (DOS, CGA, EGA and VGA), Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, Sega Mega Drive, Nintendo Game Boy and even the original 1984 model Apple Macintosh. If that's not enough you can also create your own custom modes based around four different graphics engines and a wide variety of color palettes and character fonts. (The free version only contains a limited number of systems/dither modes and the custom editors, video clip processing and animation options aren't available.)

Requests for new features

Hi, I really love your app I've been using it for a while now and I love how using the character emulation function to edit photos, its one of my favorite editing apps. I have some requests, please add more pixel sizes, so you can do 17x17, 18x18 so on. add an easy way to combine two character field things in a character set in a way similar to how a difference blending mode works on photos. + adding in more colors in character emulation (there is black and white blocks right now and when u use a character emulation it picks two colors for each square, varying values of gray (dark gray, light gray) added would add more variety and more than 2 colors could be in each square/character from the character set

Developer Response ,

Thanks for the kind words. 👍

I've a plan to improve the pixel size selection mechanism, so hopefully that'll appear in a future update.

I'm not sure how a multi-color character set mode could work, as all of the character sets are currently 1-bit - if you choose a different palette they'll use the "best" foreground and background color based on that, so it doesn't always have to be grayscale. (Perhaps I'm missing something - feel free to email me via support@8bitartwork.co.uk)

Absolutely perfect for my needs

I’ve been looking for a retro editor to create stylized videos for social media after I saw a creator making short videos mimicking retro gameplay. The first two other apps i tried are good for stills but I decided to purchase the full version of this one anyway and I can already tell that this is the one I will be using the most.

The only request or suggestion that I can think of right now is to please add an animation for scan lines so they can move in a downward motion and have some variance is speed and opacity. (Reviewed for iPhone XR, iOS 14.8.1)

Also, please allow PNGs to keep their transparent alpha channels, it gets exported as black.

Better than the competition

If you’re trying to take videos and photos, throw a pixelated filter on it and -boom- it’s done, this app can do it. If you would like to take the emulated aesthetic of an Apple IIe or NES or even a Virtual Boy, tweak it by making it high resolution to fit your source image, follow that up by setting a scanline and chroma shift effect while adjusting brightness saturation contrast and even cropping until it’s perfect THIS APP can do that all of that. And that’s barely scratching the surface. You have so much customization and control you can truly make wonderful art here. Don’t pass it up for the other guys pixel filter stuff. The IAPs are more than fair they’re almost a steal.
