Description

The Moog Model 15 App is the first Moog modular synthesizer and synthesis educational tool created exclusively for iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Mac.

Each facet of the Moog Model 15 modular synthesizer has been meticulously recreated in this application to ensure the power and transcendent sound quality of each module remains intact. The character, harmonic complexity and mystique of the Moog Model 15’s modules, from the legendary Moog 921–series oscillators and 904A Low Pass Filter, to the coveted 907 Fixed Filter Bank have been painstakingly preserved.

In order to develop the most immersive and expressive modular interface possible, the Model 15 App has been designed utilizing Apple’s new Metal advanced graphics engine. This ensures that all zooming, panning and modular patching throughout the application feels completely natural, something that would have been impossible otherwise.

The Model 15 App features both monophonic and 4-voice polyphonic operation is easily commanded via 4 seamlessly integrated controllers. Simple swipes and taps provide instant access to a traditional Moog keyboard, 1150 ribbon controller, 8-step sequencing arpeggiator and the award-winning Animoog keyboard with 22 built-in scales and polyphonic modulation capabilities.

Also included are extended features which expand the capabilities of the app beyond the traditional offerings of the hardware Moog Model 15. These include total MIDI integration, assignment for external control, use as a MIDI controller, dedicated Audio Bridge and MIDI Bridge modules, looping recorder module with overdubbing, a master ping-pong delay module and a new extension cabinet that includes additional amplifiers and voltage-controlled reversible attenuators that can be used for effects like ring-modulation.

The Model 15 App requires Big Sur version 11.0.1 or later to work.

Great with steep learning curve

Although I am interested in soundscapes acquiring a real Moog synth was only secondary to my musical interests and their high price range is well above my disposable income. However spending a few quid on the app version is a total feast, add a MIDI controller and you are set for a long and spectacular journey of sonic discovery now available to anyone for less than the price of a dinner for two. The learning curve is pretty steep on this one and the interface does not allow for a full view of the instrument, but the sounds and possibilities are outstanding. But surely you should add the possibility to zoom out so that all the modules are visible at the same time (see for ex. the Korg synts app interface).

That sound!!

The effort made to make the synth look like the real thing is remarkable - and it looks great!! This may also have educational value for those who are interested in vintage/modular gear. However it's all a bit annoying when you are actually trying to play the thing with leads everywhere and continually having to scroll around to find the connections.... so 1 star off! Result is that I basically use it for making wacky noises to distract me when I'm working and it's fantastic for that. Don't really use it for recording- too much of a fiddle to tweak it. The big thing is the sound - it sounds AMAZING!! The low frequencies are bigger and richer than ANY other software synth! Absolutely worth buying it for that alone. And of course to encourage Moog to keep making software products cos they all sound brilliant. FILTATRON, Moog!! Keep updating it please! It's been my absolute favourite guitar effect since it came out and I'm terrified it'll stop working one of these days!! If you haven't got it, everyone, buy it NOW!

It’s beautiful in every way - sound, design, usability. Just buy it!

What else can I say? Everything about the Model 15 is a work of art. Great sounding synths need to be reliable, and great sounding, and have a well designed interface and user interaction. The Moog Model D (and its Model D cousin) get it just right. That growling fat sound is so rich I sometimes play a long note and listen to it for ages.

An example or two of how well conceived and designed this synth app is. Any modular user knows how the cables can get in the way of the controls. But a simple double finger double tap dims the cables so that the underlying controls can be read and accessed.

Also, it’s likely that having plugged in one end of a cable, that your desired connection point is sometimes off screen. No problem! Just scroll with the other finger.

It is little touches like this that other synths often lack which raise the Moog synth apps above so many others.
