Food, feasts and famines in colonial Mexico 🎤 with Dr. Iván Escamilla

Presented by: Rocio Carvajal Food anthropologist, culture & gastronomy educator.  Episode 88 This episode features a fascianting conversation with Professor Iván Escamilla González, also known on Instagram as El Cronista Novohispano (The Novohispanic Chronicler). Together, we delve into a historical exploration of food, examining a range of contrasting aspects—from the lavish feasts of the upper classes to the stark realities of famine, and the creation of new food systems in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Mexico. There was so much ground to cover! We begin with an overview of New Spain, touching on its geographical, political, and social landscapes. This sets the stage for discussing the introduction of the Spanish food system. Next, we dive into the fascinating topic of political feasting in colonial Mexico, contrasting it with the darker history of hunger, famines, and food riots. In the fourth section, we shift our focus to the transpacific trade and its impact on food systems. Finally, we wrap up with a thought-provoking discussion on the challenges of researching and sharing history in the age of social media. Presented by: Rocio Carvajal Food anthropologist, culture & gastronomy educator. Episode 85 This episode features a conversation with Dr Caroline Dodds Pennock about her latest book: On Savage Shores: How Indigenous Americans Discovered Europe combining a critical perspective that questions the historiography, narratives, and consequences of marginalizing the role of indigenous people in the colonial and post-colonial contexts, with a critical view of the complex history of Mexico's formation and the silenced voices and stories that continue to bleed through the cracks of power structures.  We talk about the challenges of writing historical narratives about indigenous travelers, the types of historical research will we be looking at in the future, and what are the obstacles that decolonial historical research has to tackle to diversify and enrich present and future scholarship. Afromexico: the untold history of slavery in colonial Puebla 🎤with Dr. Pablo Sierra.

Presented by: Rocio Carvajal Food anthropologist, culture & gastronomy educator. Episode 82 Dr Pablo Sierra’s research contests that blackness is a decidedly foreign concept in the cultural history of the City of Puebla, an idealised urban centre whose narratives about Spanish baroque splendour have silenced the stories and presence of other ethnic groups, namely thousands of enslaved and free afro descendants. In this episode, we discuss the rise of Afromexican studies, Puebla’s role in the slave trade, the racialised configuration of the novohispanic society, and the challenges of critical historical research. We also talk about the case of an elite Afro-Indigenous couple in colonial Puebla, called Felipe Monsón y Mojica and Juana María de la Cruz that lived in the 17th century and rose to power and wealth as chilli tycoons. Their history reveals incredible details about social mobility, self-empowerment, interracial relations and even Puebla’s intertwined history with piracy in the Caribbean.
