    EP059: Abel Macias | Profesor de Chicana/o Studies | Cultura y Skate

    Abel Macias
    @creatureteacher @culturayskate cultura-y-skate.com

    Abel Macias is a long-time friend from our days in undergrad at San Diego State University. We grew up in the same neighborhood of East San Diego (nice people call it "City Heights") but we wouldn't cross paths until the mid 90s at SDSU. We start by discussing his experience in education at Horace Mann Junior and Crawford High, and then how his path to being a professor was anything but linear. He currently teaches Chicano and Chicana Studies at San Diego City Community College and San Diego State University. We also also discuss his passion for skating and how that lead to him launching a skate brand, Cultura y Skate. Tune for a robust discussion on skateboards, gangs, higher education and indigenous struggle.
    Shoutout @resist_edu for the assist on sound, video and cohost duties.
    Shoutout @profile784 for the head-nodding intro and outro music. Hit him up for super dope beats and graphics.

    EP058: Aled Anaya | CTE Artist & Educator | #BakersDozen

    Episode 58: Aled Anaya, Orange Glen High School

    Aled Anaya is a phenomenal artist that has the good fortune to teach students in the same neighborhood and district that he grew up in, Escondido, CA. The son of immigrant parents, Aled details his own struggles with school and how his graphic design course helped shape him into the educator he is today. Aled balances producing amazing art of his own and growing a CTE Graphic Arts program at Orange Glen High School. We get into a rich discussion about the value of a robust CTE program, and how to engage students that find creativity late in their schooling. A self-proclaimed hip-hop head, we ask Aled to give us his Top 5 MC's. He gave us "a baker's dozen". Hence, the subtitle of the episode.

    EP056: Dr. Theresa Montaño & Dr. Guillermo Gomez | Liberated Ethnic Studies

    EP056: Dr. Theresa Montaño & Dr. Guillermo Gomez | Liberated Ethnic Studies

    Episode 56 is timely and critical for our students, as we dive into the history and work that has shaped Ethnic Studies in California. Dr. Theresa Montaño and Dr. Guillermo Gomez have been putting in the work for an Ethnic Studies curriculum since 2007. We cover the basics of what Ethnic Studies is, what it should look like in our schools, and why our students have needed this curriculum for decades. The State Board of Education recently accepted a very "watered down" version of ES curriculum due to push back from some very powerful forces, and our guests do not shy away from discussing how this happened. Because the SBE has diluted and co-opted this hard work, Montaño and Gomez discuss ways that teachers and districts can move forward with a liberated Ethnic Studies curriculum. This is a critical listen for any educator or community member that would like to bring this curriculum to a local school district.

    EP055: Dr. Carmen Partida

    Dr. Partida is a dear family friend and one of the most personable doctors in the game. When the world went on quarantine, we knew we had to get Carmen on the show. She asked that we wait a few months until we really had a grasp on just how menacing this virus could be. 9 months later, we got her to record. We get into her origin story, talk about what she has seen in the emergency rooms during the pandemic, and her work in other locales. Do we ask her about the safety of reopening schools and the vaccine? Of course we do. This was such an enlightening episode. The pride of Castle Park High, Dr. Carmen Partida.
