Description

Step back in time and experience Earth history like never before. The award-winning Deep Time Walk is a ground-breaking tool enabling anyone, anywhere to take a walking audio history of our planet.

• Walk 4.6km through 4.6 billion years of deep time, each metre = 1 million years.
• Learn about key concepts from Earth’s long evolution including how Earth formed, the evolution of life, plate tectonics, oxygenic photosynthesis, multicellular life, The Cambrian Explosion, vertebrates, plants, amphibians, mammals, dinosaurs and finally (in the last 20cm) humans.
• Understand our species common ancestral heritage and interconnectedness with all life.
• Comprehend the ecological impact of humans in the blink of a geological eye.
• Time-contextual glossary available to review key scientific concepts.
• Mobility-assist mode available for those unable to walk.
• Use the What's Next portal for positive action (with organisations such as Earth Charter and 350.org).

The dramatised audio is directed by Jeremy Mortimer (over 200 productions for BBC Radio) and designed by Jo Langton (a BBC Studio Manager), with voices provided by leading actors Paul Hilton (Garrow’s Law, The Bill, Silent Witness), Chipo Chung (Doctor Who, Sherlock, Into the Badlands) and Peter Marinker (Love Actually, Event Horizon, Judge Dredd). The script is written by Peter Oswald (ex-playwright in residence at Shakespeare Globe, London) and Dr Stephan Harding.

Produced by Deep Time Walk CIC, a not-for-profit social enterprise based in the UK.

Please market this!

I absolutely loved my walk through space and time, it opened up more questions in my mind than answers; questions that we should all be asking of ourselves. I only came upon this through happenstance on the App Store, and of course will share it with others, but I would urge the developers to market this further as there is more value on this app than any other I have on my phone!

A mind blowing walk through earth history!

The deep time walk app is frankly a work of genius - or the very least a team of extremely highly developed minds. The app offers to take you on a journey through the history of our planet in the company of two guides: the first, a scientist endowed with the most up to date understanding of how the earth came to take its present form and how there came to be life on it, including humanity, and the second, someone who is unafraid to ask questions. The kinaesthetic way in which this journey unfolds as you walk - one meter of your walk being substituted for one million years - means that the experience is one that surpasses merely cerebral learning.

The app places humanity in its humbling perspective, where we appear in the very last moments of the walk, and as such the app serves as a tool to give perspective on one's own personal trials and tribulations as well as on the interaction humanity has had with its environment. The experience of walking the deep time walk offers a fresh perspective on many global and ecological questions without serving up readymade conclusions and as such should, in my opinion, be a required practice for anyone who takes the future of our planet as well as their own seriously.

It is an extremely rich experience. The walk is crammed with so much extraordinary, mind-boggling information that there is much value to be had from repeated deep time walk outings. It is in its own way a life-changing experience - particularly for those who may not have given much thought yet to our origins or looked at life much beyond the narrow confines of their own biographical life.

There is huge scope for this app - as a tool for personal growth, for awakening of global consciousness, as a means of questioning the often exploitative attitude humanity has to its habitat, and a way to reframe environmental, ecological questions. It is my hope that it will be very widely used - by communities of seekers of all kinds, by schools of all kinds and by individuals who wish to enhance their understanding of how we have come to be living on this wondrous, mysterious, bountiful planet and who aren't afraid to start caring what happens to this planet next.

Brilliant!

This app is extraordinary. I would wish every child has a chance to walk it through and all teachers to have a new smart tool for teaching. It's easy to use, you walk while listening to it and there are so many moments of excitement. When oxygen is formed after years of failed attempts it left me with such wonder. It is I imagine how the astronauts felt when they saw earth in space. I would sincerely wish you enjoy it as much as I did. The fool and scientist are perfect comrades! It's a small price to pay for a story that is potentially life changing for us all.
