Morgan Clarke is a single, working mom in tiny Kills Cross, Kansas, until Maxwell Kingston, a New York businessman moves in to her tiny town, and purchases the hospital where she works. One by one, employees are dismissed, and Morgan is one of them. Her only relief is that her children are staying with their father during the summer so they can't see her break down, panicked about how she will continue to pay bills that were already stacking up.
