Young's second Hart's Boardwalk contemporary suffers from some shaky characterization and a stock conflict between tradition and progress. When Bailey Hartwell walks in on her boyfriend of 10 years having sex with someone else, she dumps him and refocuses on self-care and making her inn a success. The last person she wants sympathy from is Vaughn Tremaine, the wealthy and conceited outsider who recently built a luxury hotel on the historic boardwalk of her resort hometown, Hartwell, Del. Their mutual hostility gives way to sexual connection when Vaughn saves her from an attack by the unscrupulous Devlin clan, who have their eyes on her inn. Despite the passion, both Vaughn and Bailey are incapable of opening up, and they always end up either arguing and falling into bed. This equivocation is a weak spot for the characters, who stray well beyond conflicted to unbelievably inconsistent. The arrival of Bailey's spoiled sister, and Vaughn's long absence to deal with other properties, provide additional drama. Young alternates viewpoints between Vaughn and Bailey, spelling out why they cannot commit and how they react to events. Despite some flaws, the plot unfolds evenly with sufficient intrigue and leads to satisfying conclusions for fans of contemporary small-town romances.

Loved it!
This is the second instalment in Samantha Young's new Hart's Boardwalk series. I very much enjoyed the first book, The One Real Thing, and was eagerly anticipating this story, I wasn't disappointed. If anything, I'd say I enjoyed this a little more than the first.
We got a glimpse of the main characters, Vaughn and Bailey in the first book. I enjoyed their dynamic immediately. They had a hate type banter going on between them that flew off the pages. I had a feeling that it was hiding other emotions underneath however, and was keen to read more. It was great to be in their heads and understand more about them.
Bailey is happy in her own skin and content with her life. She runs her family inn in a small town where everyone knows everyone and has a comfortable, if not particularly exciting life with her long time boyfriend. Things were about to take an unpleasant and unexpected turn and she finds herself facing a fresh start. Enter Vaughn. The super wealthy and pretty arrogant hotelier who Bailey feared initially was going to destroy her home town with over development but now genuinely seems to like the place. Much to Bailey's confusion and suspicion.
They were both fantastic, well developed characters. Actually I think Vaughn is probably one of the most complicated characters I've read about for a long time. This is actually one of my favourite things about Samantha Young's books. She is exceptionally talented at writing very good, three dimensional characters. They are multi faceted and, most importantly, they are believable. They are not always perfect and you can see them evolve as the story unfolds. I loved reading how Bailey and Vaughn's characters grew and enjoyed being part of their journey. especially Vaughn. There were times along the way that I really wanted to give him a shake and tell him to get his act together. But I'll let him off because he was such a great character.
This book has a little of everything. There's funny, snappy banter but also emotional moments. The attraction between Bailey and Vaughn is palpable and leaps off the pages. The plot was also very good and threw in some genuine suspense and a few surprise along the way. I was gripped from the get go and was a little sorry to let this world go when I finished.
This was an excellent addition to what is shaping up to be a seriously addictive series. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and can't wait to read the next book.
