The sexy, breathtaking mystery continues in New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones’s stunning second novel in the suspenseful Careless Whispers series—where shocking revelations will reveal themselves and nothing, and no one, will ever be the same.

Still struggling with amnesia, Ella questions everything she’s known about Kayden Wilkens—the alluring stranger who claims to have found her unconscious in an alleyway a month earlier. But was he truly a stranger—or did Kayden know her before his supposed rescue? Tormented by the potential betrayal he denies, with fleeting memories of a bombshell in her recent past, Ella must face a hard reality. Every action has consequences . . . and trusting Kayden, the one thing she most desires, might result in the direst consequences of all.

AudioBook Review: Overall: 5 Narration: 3 Story: 5

AudioBook Review:
Overall: 5 Narration: 3 Story: 5

Having finished Denial (book one), I was so caught in this series I just wanted to jump into this book and go. A few hours later, I look up only to realize that my “just one more chapter” momentum had me finishing the book in one sitting. After a quick recap that brings the salient points of the story back to the forefront of readers’ minds, we return to the moment with Kayden at the wrong end of a gun as Ella demands answers.

Bits of Ella’s life and memories are returning just as Kayden’s management of The Underground requires more of his focus, shutting Ella and her questions aside, at least for the moment. With pressure being laid on by Gallo, a detective with an irrational need to ‘show up’ Kayden by any means necessary, usually involving threats, intimidation and his ‘connection’ to Giada, the younger sister of Adriel with a huge grudge against Kayden and The Underground. As Ella’s memories start to return, fast and furiously, she is coming closer to finding some answers, and her patience is wearing thin, believing she’s a danger to both Kayden and those he protects. Tension, revelations, death and danger all bring this story to several moments of emotional climax, as Ella and Kayden come closer as the omnipresent sexual connection reveals truths about them that neither is quite ready to put into words.

Narration for this story is provided by Elizabeth Louise, with a distinct approach to presenting the characters that gives a distinct flavor to each. I’m not entirely sure that I am in love with her performance, but it did grow on me as the story continued. Most notably missing, for me, was the emotional inflections needed: she handled brusque and strident well, but the more nuanced moments of self-doubt from Ella, the rather reluctant and grudging moments of sharing from Kayden, and other moments that indicated increased tension in interactions and moments fell short of what I hoped for. I’ve encountered this narrator’s work before, and while she’s got the lighter moments down pat, there’ room for growth and improvement in bringing the subtleties of emotions integral to this story to light.

And for those of you who are wondering, yes this story does leave readers with PLENTY of unanswered questions, even though several have been resolved. Not quite a cliffhanger, but intense enough to make you ‘need’ the next story now. This series has grown on me despite several moments that felt repetitive, there’s a certain rightness to that with Ella’s determination to find her own backstory as she clings to the facts she’s remembered and discovered. I can’t wait for the next in the series to bring the story to a close.

I received an audiobook copy of the title via Simon and Schuster Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
