    Ah, the art of doctoring and providing the best patient care is so much more than book smarts. Today’s guest optometrist Dr. Shirazian discusses her passion about bringing the art of humanizing healthcare to her students and through her platform. She covers topics such as the art of good patient communication, SPIKES Protocol for delivering bad news, her favorite medical humanities books, and more.
    Dr. Delaram Shirazian earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Missouri – St. Louis and went on to complete a residency in Ocular Disease and Low Vision Rehabilitation at the Kansas City VA Medical Center.
    Dr. Shirazian is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor at SUNY College of Optometry, working with patients and students in primary care and low vision rehabilitation clinics. She also teaches the patient-doctor communication portion of the first-year curriculum and is the instructor of record of the Low Vision/Ocular Disease Micro-Credential program. Dr. Shirazian is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry.

    148 Sleep Deprivation, Burnout, And Occupational Injustice with Laura Vater, MD, MPH [Interview]

    Sleep deprivation in medicine is part of the deal, but why is it? Dr. Laura Vater shares her experiences and the experiences of others that have dealt with the grueling reality of sleep deprivation and working within a culture that rewards sleep deprived residents and trainees. She discusses the dangers she has personally faced, the mental health struggles associated with sleep deprivation, and what it will take to create a healthier system that promotes the health and well-being of practitioners.
    Laura Vater, MD, MPH is a Hematology Oncology Fellow at Indiana University. Throughout her career, Laura has remained interested in preventive health, humanism in medicine, and promotion of clinician health.
    In 2017, she developed a tool to help patients and clinicians simplify and prioritize health (the SMILE Scale). This tool is being used in schools and clinics in the US and UK.
    ​Laura earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Notre Dame, a Master of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, and a Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine. She completed her residency training in Internal Medicine at Indiana University.
    She was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society in 2018 and is a member of the Indiana University School of Medicine Honor Roll. She was awarded the Walter J. Daly award for Outstanding Resident in 2020.
    Laura enjoys hiking, reading, writing, and spending time with her family.

A must listen for healthcare providers with burnout!

Love the diversity of guests Erika has on the show to give some many different perspectives on the topic of burnout. She asks interesting questions to get to the deepest meaning from each expert. She is very knowledgable on the topic and presents it is a fun way.
