Cozz & Effect

Cozz & Effect

With its combination of drowsy nocturnal beats and aggravated rhymes, the debut from 20-year-old rapper Cozz offers a new vision of Los Angeles rap. The violence and peril of the streets is present in “Dreams,” “Western Ave. Slaves,” and “Knock the Hustle,” but it's sublimated. The album presents an experience of the inner city as filtered through the perspective of an individual who's at once enraged and introspective. The slow-motion warmth of “Come Get It,” “Ya Know Dat,” and “I Need That” forms a cocoon from the dangers described in Cozz’s rhymes.
