Donovan Blanc

Donovan Blanc isn't the name of a singer/songwriter; they're a New Jersey duo that formerly released nine EPs' worth of lo-fi pop between 2011 and 2013 as Honeydrum. Now as Donovan Blanc, Joseph Black and Raymond Schwab focus and create a laid-back album of somber pop that’s reminiscent of everyone from The Church and Triffids to Trembling Blue Stars and The Clientele. “Girlfriend” (not the Matthew Sweet song) and “Hungry a Long Time” open with a casual prettiness that’s as wondrous as a summer breeze, becoming more noticeable when it slows for a minute. The urge to re-listen to the tracks is physical. “So Make It Right” starts as a fake-out, with acoustic guitar strums and harmonies coming hard and fast before they quickly relax into another gorgeous yet unassuming melody. “Oh Donna” sounds like an update on The Association’s lite-pop of the ‘60s. “Can’t Wait to Meet You” and “Minha Menina” add a pulse that’s subdued elsewhere. “That Summer Ago” suggests the duo already know just how nostalgic these recordings sound, from a past so sublime that it hurts to think about it.
