About PJ Morton

As a solo artist and member of Maroon 5, Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist PJ Morton has left his mark on rock, pop, hip-hop, and even gospel. • The New Orleans native is the son of Bishop Paul S. Morton, a noted pastor and award-winning gospel singer. • He majored in marketing at Morehouse College and performed with the band Freestyle Nation, which recorded an album in 2002. That same year, he cowrote and produced “Interested,” a bonus track off neo-soul singer India.Arie’s Grammy-winning album Voyage to India. • In 2010, Morton became a touring keyboardist for pop-rock hitmakers Maroon 5. He officially joined the lineup in 2012 and has played on the albums Overexposed (2012), V (2014), and Red Pill Blues (2017). • Morton signed with Lil Wayne’s Young Money label in 2011 and released the EP Following My First Mind in 2012. • His 2013 major label debut album, New Orleans, features Stevie Wonder on the lead single “Only One,” which was nominated for Best R&B Song at the 2014 Grammy Awards. • In 2016, after returning to New Orleans, Morton released the mixtape Bounce & Soul Vol. 1, a celebration of the local hip-hop variant known as bounce. • His 2017 album Gumbo—released on his own Morton Records label—brought two Grammy nominations: Best R&B Album and Best R&B Song, for “First Began.” In 2018, his cover of The Bee Gees classic “How Deep Is Your Love”—also off Gumbo—earned him a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance. • Morton’s 2019 album Paul includes the single “Say So,” featuring singer JoJo. The track won Best R&B Song at the 2019 Grammys. • In 2020, Morton released his first gospel album, The Gospel According to PJ: From the Songbook of PJ Morton. Featuring gospel greats like Kirk Franklin and Kim Burrell—plus PJ’s father, Paul S. Morton—the LP was nominated for Best Gospel Album.
