Rose Gardner is one of my favorite characters. I don't think of her as a fictional person in a fictional world with fictional problems. Denise Grover Swank has added so much depth and emotion to her that I can't help but think of her as a real person. I love her quirkiness and how much she's grown over the life of the series. She continues to surprise me and to worm her way into my life. I can't help sometimes but think of how Rose would react to something or use phrases like "crappy doodles" in daily life. Even my kids say "crappy doodles!"
I always drop everything to read Rose and see what kind of shenanigans she gets herself into. I don't just love her for her entertainment factor but for the insight that she has into some of life's larger problems. She's got boat loads of trouble, stress, and drama. It's how she deals with it that offers that extra something that I get from reading about her. I always learn something new about myself and take away some new appreciation for the little things after reading a Rose Gardner tale.

Dark and Twisty...
My heart aches for Neely Kate in this novel. Rose's world has become very dark as we discover more about JR Simmons's reach into manipulating the lives of the citizens of Southern Arkansas. Rose is determined to prevail and save her friend from the depression she has sunk into after losing her babies. So far this is the darkest of the Rose Gardner novels, but it was no less riveting and I think it makes the character more believable. As Rose is no longer sheltered in her 'cocoon' she has been forced to deal with serious issues. It shows the perseverance of the heroine and demonstrates her love and devotion to her friends. Excellent installment to the Rose Gardner series.
